Fuller Long are pleased to work alongside award winning architects Roberts Limbrick to deliver a positive permission for our mutual client Places Leisure for a state of the art community leisure centre facility serving the residents of Surrey Heath Borough Council and adjoining boroughs. The proposal saw the re-development of the outdated leisure centre with a brand new purpose built facility that will house a swimming pool, splash zone, sports hall, health suite and an adventure play area.
Fuller Long provided both strategic and policy advice culminating in the preparation of a planning and heritage statement, submitted to demonstrate the appropriateness of the proposal in both a planning and historic building context within the local and national context.
Surrey Heath Borough Council continually work with their partners towards its objective of ensuring that residents’ needs are met within the Borough. Leisure facilities were identified as an area within the Borough that needed to be improved. Fuller Long, alongside Roberts Limbrick Architects and other professional consultants were able to demonstrate that not only would the new facility deliver an identifiable need for leisure facilities, but had an overall design and quantum of the building that would enhance and improve the setting.
In addition, the site was located within the setting of a statutorily listed building which required professional input from our heritage team. The buildings of special interest included a church built in the 1920s, as well as the listed buildings which form the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The Council’s Conservation Officer raised no objections to the proposals following our Heritage team’s comprehensive and robust assessment.
Subsequently, the application received officer’s support and was presented before the planning committee. Planning committee supported the application and resolved to grant planning permission, subject to conditions.
The central location of the new building will ensure that residents of Camberley continue to benefit from a wide and extensive range of leisure facilities within the local area benefiting the wellbeing of local people. The new leisure facility is currently under construction and due to open in later this year.
